KDDI Develops Dual-Mode Car Navigation Communications System
September 09, 2005
To address network jams when several terminals access the same Internet site simultaneously, KDDI R&D has come out a system that incorporates wireless communications and TV broadcasting. This system delivers data to multiple terminals with the radio waves from TV stations initially and then resends data failing to reach the terminals with the bandwidth used for cellular phones. KDDI R&D has tested the system with a car navigation prototype that received map information with radio waves during commuting and obtained the inaccessible data with the bandwidth for 3G wireless services. With plans to perform field trials in a city, KDDI R&D expects to launch a system for car navigation within three to four years.
